Oh dear something has gone wrong with my Grandads computer....

Hes tried to install Silent Hunter III - game just freezes after installing update... Checks disk and just black screen...

So I poped round to see what the score was.

After looking in the Nvidia display panel it says the card is running in PCI mode.

I grabbed the latest Nvidia drivers and installed them ... rebooted - same problem ... and still the same problem with the game..

any ideas ?
its a XFX 6600GT
Assu K8N motherboard.

sounds like you're missing chipset drivers for the mobo?

a quick google seems to say the board has an nforce3 chipset. if that's the case, you're best off getting the latest drivers from nvidia. :)

http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce3_winxp_5.11

edit: if you've already installed these and are still having problems, try disabling fastwrites in the bios. this seems to be a common cause of problems with nvidia chipsets and gfx cards.... :p

yep thanks for that - installed the drivers from the mobo disk... is indeed Nforce 3 ...

Is it best to get the gfx driver from XFX or the latest from Nvidia ?

Thanks for your reply.

yep tried that driver... I guess the mobo board driver aint installed properly then...

whats the best sequence to install again ?

uninstall the nvidia driver (gfx) then install the mobo drivers... then the gfx again ?

and do you install all the Mobo ones... gart... etc

you should be able to install the mobo drivers with the nvidia gfx drivers in place. no need to re-install those.

and install all the components available during the chipset install unless you are definitely not using something such as ethernet or sound drivers.
