What do people recommend? I would prefer to have the XFX as it has shader model 3 but does the X800GTO2 even support Direct X 9C? Gaming will be on 15" monitor so nothing incredibly powerful required but I would like to keep the card for about two years, the X800 series are already quite old arent they?

Both cards will run fine under Direct X 9C.

6800GS - benefit is SM3, but card is more expensive
X800GTO2 (or Powercolor X800GTO16 : essentially same card but Powercolor is cheaper & 16 pipes unlocked) - no SM3 (not really used at present) & either card is cheaper than the GS.

Performance wise all cards are close & on a 15" monitor nothing to be concerned over.
If it was me i would buy the cheapest of those i could find, considering your needs.

My old GT02 was a stormer of a card! Overclocked well past X850XTPE speeds easily. (topped out at 660/1270 on stock volts/ cooling).

The only advantage of the 6800GS is SM3.0.

Both are excellent cards. I would get whichever is cheapest.
