I recently got a 6800GS XXX XFX which should be 485 and 1100. And it is, but only for 3d. For 2d it is 325 and 1100.

Why would this be?

Please help!

because isnt that how its supposed to work

why have all the power in 2d mode... just be wasting energy and causing more heat than necessary.

I'm not sure - it didn't happen with my 6800 GT and Ultra, nor my ATI cards.

And why underclock it - a GS is supposed to be 425mhz.

thats how i understood it as well. in 2d the same amount of acceleration is not required, so to save the card from extra wear, it clocks itself down.

All modern cards now have seperate 2D/3D clock speeds, its the way forward as in 2D mode the card does not need the additional power so running at lower clock speeds saves power and lowers heat output. :)
