XFX 8800GTX

it's just a bit slower than a 9800gtx+ and a 4850, but second hand can be had for under £70, so if you can handle its size, noise, and power requirements then it is good value second hand, otherwise it's old tech and not worth getting. :)

I have 2 of them and i wouldnt say they were noisy at all. Sure there long cards, but i wouldnt say they are power hungry, i ran a single one on a corsair 450w, olny changing to 750w when i got the 2nd card.

I already have one running my 24". I am just curious how much faster and more power efficient the newer cards are.

A GTX260, 280 or an HD4870 would all be quicker than a single 8800, not sure how much more power efficient they are thoi, id say they need more the 260 and 280 especially

I have an Ultra, is still very respectable, and was a cheap and temporary upgrade from my 8800gt whilst my GTX260 is coming from the states.

1920x1200 or higher?
8800GTX beats quite a lot of newer cards with 'just' 512MB of VRAM.
4850 512MB and 9800GTX 512MB are better in terms of updated tech, but the 8800GTX just has such a high res/AA threshold.

XFX GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI is the one I have.

So what you are saying is that at the high res my monitor uses, this is still a very good card then.

No not suffering at all, just curious, especially at the higher resolution.

Specs are:

C2d E6850
Asus P5K Premium
8GB Corsair XMS
24" Samsung

It plays all my games well and doesn't even have to try for general day to day stuff, gets a 5.9 in Vista.

Answered my own query really :)

Wish i'd taken the plunge and got the GTX over my GTS 320 now. At the time when I got it I had a 19" screen, now i'm on 22" and it's really showing it's age. Plus, second hand value is rock bottom compared to the GTX. I'd have to front at least £30 i'd think to upgrade second hand.

Still, i'm waiting for the new 55nm cards to come out and prices to settle.

The 8800GTX gets beaten by the g92 models at low resolutions but comes on strong at high res.
The extra memory bandwidth helps a lot.

The fans aren't noisy but they are big cards and run very hot.
A pair of them makes a very good room heater. :)
