xfx ati 4890 high pitched squeal

Built my lush system, i7-920, asus p6t, 64 gb ocz SSD, 6gb ocz gold ram, ocz gamerxstream 850w psu, antec 900, samsung 24", G15 and an xfx 1gb 4890.

All uber quiet, much more so than previous mesh computer prebuilt (amd x2 3800, although, tbh, that is still a very solid, reliable and well built rig and is now with the wife!).

However, soon as i go into any 3D enviornment the ruddy card starts this godawful high pitched squeal that changes pitch if you look at a different region of the screen.

Perhaps it is more obvious with everything else so quiet, but my 512mb 9800GT in the other rig is silent in identical situations.

I contacted OCuk, and then read the google, and apparently it is a common thing across these higher end cards.
Martin R responded quickly and advised this was a common issue and "not a fault" which should go away after a few weeks when it has bedded in.

Not his fault obviously, so no blame there, but i do wonder at what point something is regarded not as a FEATURE but as a FAULT.

If the card, which wasn't stated on the box, randomly poked me in the eye, or bought all the fish at Tescos but didn't affect it's display capabilities be classed as a no fault found feature?

Where is the line drawn?
I suppose i could RMA it and hope i get a card that doesn't include this new feature, or i could train my ears to tune it out but is this an acceptable state of affairs? Reminds me of the whole "acceptable duff pixel rubbish" we had to endure a couple of years ago!

You can go right off computers can't you? :D

yea its very commong thing, capacitor squeal

just increase fans rpm, will keep your card cooler and you ll hear less annoying sound =)

nothing to worry about it, however, if it really annoys you, you can always rma it

squeal only appears in high fps times, such as games menus, ati tool, and other benchmarking/stabiltiy software;

i ve had very loud squeal on gtx 285; but i changed the card to cross 4890, the squeal is still there but not audible (unless you specifically listen to it)

its usually gfx + psu combo, some people changed psu's to get rid of that squeal, but its really nothing to worry about (just poorly made structure by both nvidia nad ati)

I'd remove the competitor name.

Unfortunately many cards from both ATI and Nvidia suffer from the dreaded capacitor squeal. Both my 8800GTX and 8800GT squeal when they are producing very high FPS and when folding, but I have got use to it now.

Many people have tried to RMA their cards, with mixed success on getting a card back that doesn't squeal. It has also been noted that the PSU can affect the card squealing, ie the same card might squeal in one system but not in another.

There are some ghetto methods of trying to stop the squealing, coating the back of the PCB in nail varnish or something similar iirc springs to mind.

Edit:- Soundly beaten :D

its nothing to worry about unless its so loud the neighbors koncks on the wall (just tell them to **** off )

One thing you have to remember,
and i beleave cap squeel does cause card clocking limitations

i have had a load of 4890s in the past and the ones that did sqeel didnt perform quite as highly when overlocked as the ones that didnt squeel ect.

:D

I`ll give it a few weeks thrashing the pants off it to see if it loosens up like a good diesel engine....

If it doesn't i`ll just get my kids to stand next to me and make an ever so slightly more irritating sound whilst i`m playing--that should take my mind off it!

Not in my experience. What are you basing this on? Just your experience with your recent cards?

Cap squeal won't effect anything other than your ear's.

Its possible, but im baseing it on actually haveing the cards that sqeel in my system and the cards that didnt sqeel in the same system and running comparison tests trying to find there highest clocks.

could be a mind boggle but i doult it lol, im baseing it on experiance.

I think you find they ALL squeal even the ones you currently own. The ones that don't are just squealing outside of your earing range. Hence why it will make no difference to overclocking.

I think your PSU's a bit much for that system anyway, you could easily make do with a Corsair 620W Modular. Also, my friends OCZ PSU blew up on him, so it's a brand i'm going to stay wary of.

yes I even hear a scream from my system if I knock it that is than it shuts up

I ve never had it yet, and I would say it screams all the time but the wave lenghts and freqancy is out of our hearing range, thats probley why some people get headachs while gaming and stuff

Ive noticed squealling from my asus 4890, I thought It was my hard disks, as it only happends when I am transfering large files..???? but it definately aint the disks, its definately the card!!!

Cant blame 3d performance putting it under load..????

I have not noticed any squealing from my xfx 4890. And my case is close to me (at ear lvl). Mine is also the std ATI cooler not the newer version.

i also have an XFX 4890 (standard not the OC),

it squealed a lot when i first had it, i can't remember when it stopped but it's about 6months old now and is running fine and silent (admittedly i have swapped the cooler for an artic cooler).

just thrash it with some benchmarks for a day or two and see if you notice any difference.
