How big a step up are these cards from an X1950xt?

*Just* going from the 3DMark06 scores...

Find the X1950 XTX (yes I know you only have the XT but it really isn't that far off) here...

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/charts/desktop-vga-charts-2006/3DMark06-v1.0.2,582.html

...and then compare it to a 4870 1024Mb (1Gb) here...

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/chart...s-2009/3DMark06-v1.1.0-3DMark-Score,1195.html

Hopefully you'll reach the conclusion that you're going to need to change your pants at least twice after you strap any modern day card into your rig. Having said that though, you might need to upgrade your CPU and a few other bits to ensure you won't be bottlenecking the new gfx as much :)

Surely it must be Nvidia's turn to have their prices thrashed a bit? I think Fatboy has covered every ATI card in recent history over the past week or so :)

Yes and it sort of makes me want to cry. :D

I do good work for the red team. Slackworth deals with the green and he has some good deals going at the moment.

Wow. I've been waiting to upgrade my graphics card for a while but could not find any for decent amount of money. This could be just what im looking for. The X1950XT has done me well for a while but its struggling since i upgraded my monitor to a 1920x1080 res one. Im just really looking for something that can handle games like wow and LOTRO with decent settings. Currently im running them with a mixture of low and medium settings.

I will upgrade the rest of my system later on but I think it should be ok for the time being. Current spec below.

C2duo 2.4 running @ 3.2 ghz
4gb corsair ram @ 4 4 4 12
2x500 Gb hard disks
ATI X1950XT
dvdr+rw drive
creative xtrememusic
Hiper 580 watts power supply

Yes that system will still be fine for any recent graphics card. I was originally assuming that since your gfx was so old that the rest of your rig might also be of same age, hence the system bottleneck comment. However, as it turns out it looks like it's the gfx that is your current bottleneck.

As mentioned before, take your pick from any current card starting from around £120 and you will be more than pleased. If you want to buy something to keep as long as you have had your 1950xt then the 4870x2 2Gb around £240ish inc vat from OCuk is a good bet :)

Already ordered the first card in the first post by fatboy. cant wait!:D

well the X1950xt was a free upgrade from HIS from a rubbish earlier card whose fan broke. They sent this because the one I had was not manufactured any more so I got a way better card :D. Never felt the need to upgrade as anything i played worked fine. now it just struggles!

New card should be here tomorrow!

Hey guys I got my card today and need a bit of advice on the physical install.

In the little booklet that comes with it it states that the correct install for would be if 2 pciex cables are directlly attached from the power supply to the card. There is a diagram which shows the incorrect way to attach power supply. It states to NOT to use the 4 pin to pciex adaptor to connect to power supply

I only have 1 pciex cable direct from the power supply and would need to use an adaptor for the second power connection. should it be ok? whats confusing me is that the card actually comes with two 4 pin to pcix adaptors!

Ignore the manual and do this instead...

Your power supply will have multiple cables where each one will split into two, three or even four molex (the thing that you are calling 4 pin) connectors.

Use one 2xmolex->pci-e power adaptor per cable. Do not place both 2xmolex->pci-e power adaptors on a single cable!

Hopefully that wasn't too confusing :)

yeah i think its connected fine now as ive been using it for a few hours now and its working ok.

I have one pcie cable connected directly in to the card . and then used one adaptor with 2 seperate cables plugged into each 4 pin slot on the adaptor. Is that correct?

check my photoshop skills :D

That's an improvement on what I was trying to explain so yes you have it plugged in correctly :)

I think you will have a great future as a graphic designer
