XFX Dual Fan 6870 crashes with only one monitor attached!?

Got a weird one for you guys today.

Basically, if this card has only one monitor connected to it via any connector (HDMI, DVI, mDP) it will crash at idle (i.e. sitting at the desktop).

If two cards are connected, then it doesn't...

I *think* i've traced it back to the cards ULPM (Ultra Low Power Mode) which clocks it down to 100/300 when only one monitor is connected.

So if I boot with two monitors (this is on a fresh install of W7 x64, XP and OS X), it will boot up, run fine, I can game for hours.

Disconnect one monitor or start up with only one monitor, it crashes within a few seconds, I assume because, it's coming out of the ULPM and falling over in the process.

Given that I can repeat this over and over without fault, is the card buggered?

It's a week old, thinking of sending it back for a refund so I can find myself a reference card as the cooler, albeit quiet under load, is louder than my 4870 at idle, which defeats the point.

Thoughts?

Considering the card can't run on normal idle speeds with a single monitor, then I would say it should count as faulty. Very weird problem that... being unable to run speeds too low... might be the idle voltages being too low?

Anybody got any thoughts to as why this card doesn't work yet my 4870 is rock solid?

I think I'm going to have to go down the not fit for purpose route!

Sounds to me like the card is up clocking to power the two monitors and thats why it is stable with two on.

You could fix it by disabling CCC and overclocking or setting a firm clock and voltage in Afterburner. But, as you say if it's new you're better off returning it.

Well it works ok with their machines, apparently.

The problem is the card is mainly used in OS X, and hence no control over the card what-so-ever.

I have to pay another £50 to get this card back, so I've said it isn't fit for purpose if it doesn't work with my (server class) hardware.
