XFX HD4870 Problems

After finishing university I decided to build a cheap(ish) rig to replace my aging dell xps laptop so I vouched to pick up an ATI HD4870 512mb from XFX.

So I install it alongside the rest of my computer today and although the performance is just as I expected I am experiencing a few problems that I was hoping you guys at overclockers forums could possibly shed some light on.

Basically since installing the card I have been experiencing some mild artifacting (in the form of some black triangle/square shapes) appearing on particular textures/parts of maps/models that the graphics card is trying to render. This has only appeared on 3dmark06 and Age of Empires 3 (as far as I have tried).

Now, this got me worried, here's me thinking I just paid next day delivery on a graphics card and now I have got to wait a week waiting for a replacement. So what did I do? I kept trying software out on it.

I can run counterstrike 1.6, counterstrike:source, call of duty 4, battle for middle earth, warcraft 3 with no issues at all (in terms of artifacting and general corruption of image). Whats up with that?

Also, my HD4870 idles at 70-75 degrees and gets to 80-90 degrees under load. Is it just me or is this a little high (as temps go). This is a BRAND NEW CARD.

PC Spec:
Thermaltake LANBOX Silver
AMD Phenom x4 9500 AM2+ and ECS motherboard (bundle from ******.co.uk)
2gb Kingston Hyper X 1066MHZ DDR2 CL5-5-5-15
2x 500GB SATAII HDD's
CIT 700WATT PSU
OS : Windows 7 Beta

Also using the latest ATI Catalyst drivers.

Thanks!

Mine was hitting over 110 due to poor cooling in my case and would cut out. At max I would want to hit 80 under load.

Idle 55-ish lets say?

I've now got a mighty 4x fans in my Lian Li case so its nice and cool. How is it inside yours? Good airflow?

The cooling is likely to be somewhat inadequate. Inside the case there is 1 80mm fan and another 2 smaller fans on the back of the LANBOX. The graphics card is using its stock cooler (that doesn't seem to cover the whole graphics card itself).

I seem to be getting this artifacting/graphic corruption on some games but not others. I tried UT3 last night and it was completely fine.
But then i try crysis and I get the same graphic corruption I see when running 3dmark06 and Age of Empires 3.

Could these at all be related?

My XFX HD4870 use to idle at 70-75 idle and reach 90-95 on COD4 on the standard XFX cooler ... I swapped the cooler for a Akasa Vortex - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-047-AK - and now it idles at around 50 with the fan set to low speed so it's silent ... I can cool it further more down to about 35 if i speed up the fan ... defo worth the £11 it cost, think its £14 again now
