Hi guys I bought this a couple of years back from the MM - the seller had took it apart and reassembled it for whatever reason… anyways during lockdown I did nothing but play cs that didn’t push the system at all. Now I’ve started playing other games and the temps are reaching above 90c and it’s crashing the system.

I have a thermaltake core P3 case where surely airflow isn’t an issue? Or is it? Or was it reassembled poorly and I’ll have to reassemble it again myself?

Thoughts? Thanks

I assume you mean 6900 XT? :p

90c on what, the hotspot? If so that temp is fine as the max is 110c. The GPU should not be crashing because it hits 90c.

Have you tried undervolting or reducing the power limit? You could also try and repaste it yourself.

89-90* is normal on hot spot @ 280W power draw, what's your temps on "not hot spot"? ;)

And are you sure its not CPU that crashing your PC? Have you got it overclocked?

Hi Matt. All standard im not sure tbh just says that temp then crashes and VGA light flashes after crash. Do you think the 850w power supply is enough if it spikes?

Is it hard to do? Taking this apart I have done many way back but not recently also how is the ram connected to the heatsink with the gooey paper type stuff? Can this be bought online? I'd give it a go as the gpu itself runs everything so well

GPU CUR TEMP or CPU JUNC TEMP is hot spot?

Quick torture test gpu cur temp reaches 90ish junc around 110 cpu doesnt go above 55 room temp around 16c at the moment. Could it be the case? It is open but hot air could just be gathering around the gpu.

I ran an XFX MERC 6900 XT for several months.
It did run quite warm, 85+ and lots of fans.
It also did the Black Screen thing, but that was mostly Windows 11 and the AMD drivers.

If it's crashing the system, most likely some other problem.

The reviews considered this the top 6900xt with temps of 75c... and I have an open case with the P3 core. I might try to reapply the paste but LtMatt had no issues I don't know if it maybe took a knock during transport. It's running at the top possible temp just throottling every time.

Did you find a guide anywhere to take this apart? I'm assuming its not so hard but haven't done one in a long time

I'm going to repaste it would this work well?

Also what product would I need to replace the contacts for the VRAM?

Thank you.
Finding the correct pad thickness is a pain in the arse. Best bet is to measure them when you have it apart and then buy the correct size. I would also recommend one which are super soft, like Arctic TP-3/Alphacool Apex. Not all 0.5mm/1mm/2mm are the same.

The default pads etc should still be fine, it's likely just a bad contact issue. Liquid metal or any good thermal paste should do the job. Probably just needs a good torque on the retention bracket.

Definitely sounds like it was taken apart by someone who didn't know what they were doing.
I've just realised, I was the person who sold @Vegeta this GPU, so cheers for that @Darujhistan .

Looking back at the for sale thread, I bought it B Grade from a UK Retailer (not ocuk) but got a good deal for it at the time (that was during the mining boom where GPU prices were silly high) so I kept it and repasted it to improve temps myself.

I guess they got worse after time has passed though as it was two years ago now. Let us know how it goes with a repaste @Vegeta.

The default pads in the paste tend to be indented so i'd rather not use them any suggestion guys? Rather do this once and properly it literally reached top temp within seconds and idles at that temperature throttling.

Right ordered some pad and a lot of paste may as well get the best £60 or so in total. LtMatt is there any special type of drivers I need or your usual philips/torx etc?

EDIT: Just to confirm you did not use liquid metal when repasting? As this stuff cannot be taken off?
