Hi All

My Trusty 5850 died on me, well its overheating!

In a rush of blood i went and bought an XFX R7 260X

I was quite happy with it, smaller that 5850 and needing less power

I have a monitor with a max resolution of 1280x1024, so that card is ample for me

However, when i lashed on MW3 the freakin card sounded like a hairdryer!!! A very high pitched whine and loud

Has anyone got any experience with any of the R7 range or the HD7xxx range and got a nice card that is quiet. Im trying to save on cash here so im talking £120 max without the need for software to limit the fans!

What's wrong with using software? The noise your 260x is having is probably due to the default driver fanspeed profile, and you can override it by setting your own custom fanspeed profile using things such as MSU Afterburner etc.

Yeah, my issue with it is more that i dont want to have to do that, but i will try that tonight and see if it makes a difference. I couldnt find a software that would do it, but i think that was my search phrase! :)
Edit: Actually i tried it in the ATI Catalyst Centre, but i could only set a single manual setting, i couldnt set say Max: 70%

Give MSI Afterburner a go. Not only you'd be able to overclock your 260X with it, but you can set a custom fanspeed profile which will rise or fall according to profile of fanspeed vs temp you set. It's very straight forward to use.

Just remembered this thread

I used MSI Afterburner, created a new fan profile, not to go over 65% speed. Thats it sorted, but still im not happy that i had to do this. I am considering a fanless heatsink
