XFX Radeon 6850 Temps

Hi,

I hope this is ok to post here, as I didn't buy the card from OC? If not, please delete.

I recently bought a XFX Radeon 6850 and I'm little surprised how loud it runs.

Under general use (WIN 7, Photoshop, web browser, email, Visual Studio) it seems to hover around 60°C - 65°C with the fan at 65%, does that sound normal?

At the moment I have one side the case open to see if that will reduce the temp, and thus the fan speed but it never drops below 60°C

I don't have a case fan installed and I'm wondering if this might be a good idea?

I don't know if it is possible but is there a way to set a profile just for general use which would make the fan a bit quieter?

Thanks in advance,

I don't think that sounds normal at all, my 6850 sits on 25% fan idle or low load and only increases when I open something like Battlefield, temperature is around 35-45 usually the low end. Though I guess all cards aren't the same...

How long have you had this card? I would be willing to throw out a few suggestions like refresh the thermal compound, clean the fan etc before attempting to "set a profile". Of course don't take my word on it, just suggestions.

First post \o/

Edit: As TheMorningStar said, don't re-paste if it's under warranty still.

Don't do the above if its still in warranty :P It may be worth tightening up the HS&F screws though (do not over tighten). and check the HS&F for dust build up etc

But that is a high temp for such a high fan setting and in 2D mode.

Run GPUZ to make sure the 2D clocks are kicking in when they should and while it is open check it's GPU usage, a driver or software issue could be running it 100% or something silly like that.

I'm also assuming your room isn't unusually warm and it isn't sat next to a radiator.

Also how does the card behave in a gaming environment?

That doesnt sound right at all, i have a 6870 BE that on the stock cooler would sit at 40c at 25% fan just browsing ect.

You say you have no fans in the case, if it's getting toasty in there then it wont help but 60c at idle seems a bit excessive.

Thanks for the replies,

I have CPUz running, not entirely sure how to check the 2D clocks are working? But it does say the CPU load is at 0%

I wouldn't say the room is particularly warm, especially at this time of the year.

Thanks

I have a XFX ATI Radeon HD 6850 Black Edition 1024MB on normal use its on ~50°C but to make it cooler I OC it down with CC Center incl. fan speed to minimum.
My only problem with the card is that after almost a year got a bit noisy. I cleaned it 2 weeks ago (and every 2 months) from all dust inside but no changes. This is the most noisy part in my PC and makes me a bit disapointed as I don't always play games in the night and when PC is on my wife can't sleep that good as with PC OFF. Any solution ? I sill need some power for games ;)
If moderatros can see my details they will be able to find me on FB and take a look on my build.

I'm running 2 monitors and I just disabled the 2nd monitor and it had a massive effect on the temps. I think this is because the GPU Memory clock is for one monitor is set at 300mhz but when I enable the second monitor it jumps to 1050mhz, is that normal?

======EDIT==========

Right, I have fixed one problem. The problem was with Flash Player. I had enabled GPU acceleration in the flash Player settings. Now, with one monitor on and Chrome running the temp is at 46°C and fan 47%.

Unfortunatly, as soon as I enable the second monitor the cpu clock jumps back up to 1050mhz, I wonder if there is a way around this?

Thanks for the replies.

Sadly it's normal. I have a pre-overclocked XFX 6850 won from AMD and I too found it loud. I also noticed 54c idle temperatures simply being in the desktop!

Since I knew from the 5000 series and upwards memory clocks clock to max speeds when a second monitor is connected to prevent flickering, I unplugged my second one and temps instantly fell to 42c.

However when testing Furmark load the max temperature was 77c even with both monitors, so I left the second one connected, downloaded MSI Afterburner and created a custom profile. That sorted out the noise problem when normal browsing even with hardware acceleration enabled in Flash.

Do you know, with AfterBurner, is there a way to set the Memory clock speed for dual monitors?

Thanks

Sadly no :(. If there was a way I would be willing to try it, but there seems to be methods modifying the BIOS but I don't want to risk bricking the card.

It should just tell you on the primary GPUZ screen towards the bottom. will display both GPU and Memory speeds, I think you found it though reading down the posts :)

Hmm, Does anyone know if the equivalent nvidia card, the GTX 560 Ti, has a similiar problem with dual monitors?

Thanks

I believe cards from both parties does the same thing. Older generation cards doesn't do it since they don't have the memory underclocking feature implemented, but recent cards do in order to save more power and cooler temps.

OK, that starts to be a bit strange for me. Just started my PC after 1h break so all hardware should be cool but not cold. When no additional program is running PC is quiet but when I start my FF or some stuff like that some fan starts running faster making more noise. When I minimize FF after a few sec. all comes back to normal. What can be the problem ? I was thinking already to change from air cooling into water but 1st need to make sure it's worth doing it.
XFX ATI Radeon HD 6850 Black Edition 1024MB + 2nd inc. HIS ATI Radeon HD 6950 IceQ X Turbo 2048MB (in near future) in crosfire... Can't find waterooling blocks on OC webpage. Any ideas ? Or maby just GPU processor blocks ?
