Hello, a friend of mine bought a HD XFX XXX 4870 and he says that his clocks are not what the box says they should be.

Here is a picture he sent me

gpu.jpg

for some reason fan speed is at 0%

clocks at 200/500

clocks meant to be 775/950

Before you all say "Its ATI PowerPlay technology" and that the clocks are lower on 2D apps and increase on 3D apps, when he runs a 3D app, his clocks do not change according to catalyst/GPU-Z and FPS is not great in Unreal Tournament 3.

I do not understand this at all, because my XFX 4890, is auto changing clocks when i run 3D app and my fan speed changes auto aswell.

Does anyone know why the clocks are staying the same, is it a faulty card?

Well at a guess as it's running such low clocks, it doesn't require the fan to be spinning. However has he just set the clocks in overdrive to be what they should be and tried, obviously set the fan speed to around 50-60%.

Ah, well that's going to cause problems for a start. Tell him to wisely get a proper PSU, from a well respected brand ie Corsair/BeQuiet/Silverstone etc

The 600W version of that is listed as having 24A on the 12v rail, which isn't enough for the card. A Corsair HX620W for example has 48A on the 12v rail....

If the PSU only has 24A on the 12v thats more than likely the issue, not enough power. You'll need at least 30~32A.

Thanks for the replies. I am the person with the 4870 clock speed problem :(...

My Computer Specification:
2.5GHz Phenom Quad Core
3GB DDR2 RAM
1GB 4870 GDDR5
250GB HD
Abit Crossfire Mobo
EZ-Cool 650 Watt PSU

Anyway, after visiting the corsair website and doing a component check, they suggest I buy their 450, 520, 550, 620, 650 Watt+ power supplies... they all supply over 40amps on the 12v Rails so seems plenty :)

P.S, would you guys recommend that I didn't use my PC at all until I upgrade to a new PSU? I dont want to damage anything :D

ok thanks a lot, i will use my computer but not for any 3D applications :)

ill post back here when I get my new PSU which should hopefully solve the problem

Fingers Crossed :D

Where are you buying it from OCUK?

If you get 'ArcAne151' to buy it for you, you can get free next day postage :D

Well, I'm running my quad core Intel q9550 overclocked, 8 GB memory, 3 hard disk, 1 blu-ray drive and a 4870 1GB card on a corsair HX520 with no problems.

Very nice psu. If the HX620 is only a little more it may be worth getting just for a little overhead - otherwise the HX520 will be fine. :D
