Hello all

Has anyone here had those XL rated tyres fitted to their car and if so, did you notice a change in the ride quality and noise?

Yes on my S80 and I think my V12 Evos on my E60 are XL rated and no noticeable change, I'm sure XL is just what is required on heavier cars.

I dont have a choice, ive already got them, they are what were fitted tot he wheels when i bought them.

Im curious to know how much of an effect they are having on the ride and noise

I wouldn't have thought the XL rating would affect road noise, just the quality of the rubber and tread itself. You can have a cheap normal tyre louder than a better quality xl tyre, or vice versa.

What tyres do you have on what car

I ueed to have XL Yokohama AVS dB tyres on my Accord. The car came with these from the dealer and I always replaced them with XL rated tyres.

I think I then posted a query here about using XL tyres and found out that the car didn't actually need them so have been using 91Y tyres ever since.

I never really noticed any real differences between the tyres to be honest.

I changed to XL tyres on my softroader. It didn't require them according to the specs but I found the wear a little less. Makes no difference in ride quality that is noticeable.

XL means extra load. They can withstand more stress. The sidewalls are stiffer. They are required for heavy cars. They are also popular with enthusiasts (even for cars that don't need XL) because they are better for cornering.

It seems they are the same except XL means the tyre is rated to a higher pressure and therefor can take more load.
