Does anyone have any clue if XL rated tyre rubber last longer without hardening, dry rotting as it ages? I heard they have stiffer sidewalls, so maybe it would have some effect to that. Because i have a car in family that isn't going to be driven much, but i want the tyres to last. My heart would ache if i had to throw out tyres with more than 80% tread left. Btw would you advise on buying XL tyres for a volvo v70(2010) 2.4d that has curb weight of 1800kg, there is some potholes here too. Thank you

XL rated are designed for heavier cars and have a re-inforced sidewall. I'd go with whatever was recommended by the manufacturer originally.

I used Falken Azenis FK510 in an XL on the 18's on my old V70 D5 (2011). Was fine and no downside from what I could see.
With regards to longevity as Minstadave says I doubt it makes a difference.

XL tyre are not made from different rubber..... Are you special much

XL stands for EXTRA LOAD, not EXTRA LIFE....

Thats just life if you do low miles. Sadly on a lot of secondary cars I have owned I have ended up ditching tyres with 10,000s of miles left in them because they are just old.

Dont forget you are recommended to change tyres every 5-6 years. With some modern tyres doing 30,000+ miles, it really hits the low mileage driver.

May as well select tyres with short mileages and enjoy them :)

My Focus has XL tyres and they did save me the other week when I hit a pot hole - no marks on rim or tyre.
Hit pothole years ago and had bent rim and bulged tyre - The tyre wasn't XL but I doubt if you could get them that long ago.
