Regarding a GPU to get in march.
Well, my wonderfull girlfriend saw the post and said
"Why dont I get you a graphics card for xmas"? - I love my lady.

Requirements-
Dual screen + HDMI
1920 capable
Dont wanna be able to hear the fan above all the others in my case.

Main usage -Steam games + some C&C.
Heavy photoshop use.
Light/medium Premiere use.
Im also learning sketchup (which made my system lock up the other day)

Not bothered whether ATI or nVidia, although if its any use, I do preffer red+black over green+black :D

BUDGET- FLAT LINE £150, dont suggest any more expensive unless its available somewhere else.

If you want to run 2x screen and HDMI all at the same time then you will have to go with the ATI 5 series as older ATI cards and the current nVidia cards (except one 3rd party design) can only have 2 active displays at a time total.

Not neccessary to have dual + HDMI at the same time.
Just want HDMI capability.
Idealy HDMI + 1x secondary screen.
Deffinately needs dual capability though.

Thanks for reply

5830 or GTX460

Right, its as above now really...
5830 or GTX460(768)? (leaning slightly more towards 5830 territory for output connectivity reasons)

And why do XFX seem to get slated?

The cards Ive got in mind are by HIS, EVGA, MSI, Gigabyte and Saphire- Do people get many problems with these manufacturers?

save your money and ask for socks.

6850/6870

forget about 5830 and 460

I really do love replys that offer no advice or knowledge.

Firstly- The socks. Am I supposed to LOL that? Or ask whether to get a pair that has the best OC capability?

Secondly, the 6k series.... I have £150 budget. As Ive already said.
So unless theyre on sale now with confirmed prices, please dont suggest it.
And to be fair, I cant see a 50 or a 70 coming in under my budget.

tbh she's probly costing you a fair whack of your disposable income, the offer of a gfx card upto £150 isnt much of a payback, tell her she's gotta buy you a 6970 or leave

Shes probably offered it to try and buy out the guilt she has over shagging your brother/father/friend more than she does you. ;)

I know this is meant as a joke but that is some serious dark comedy there... I don't know whether it would be appreciated by the OP.

I would say that a 1gb ram card is a necessity at the resolution you have said, the 768mb 460's might not be up to the cut when things get intensive. I am not a pro with gpu usage in regards to applications like photoshop however, so any extra clarification would be appreciated.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-006-HS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1711 - You get your hdmi, extra dvi connections for a second monitor. It isn't the fastest card out there though unfortunately, I believe it performs at about 4890 level.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/171?vs=180 - You do admittedly get a great deal more grunt for your ££ with the 460 so I would recommend that, although it's £15 over your budget for a 1gb version (which comes with hdmi and extra dvi cables too).

The final question comes down to performance/price, if you can spare the extra £15 get a 460 without a doubt, otherwise you will be wanting the 5830 I believe, though the 768mb 460 still outperforms it in game benchmarks and is much cheaper. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/171?vs=156

On a final note, both are about the same noise levels, I don't think you will have too many troubles. The 460 runs cooler too if that's a sway. The benchies speak for themselves.

On a final note, the 6xxx series will be on their way soon and it is believed they will be competitively priced to tackle the 460, so you may end up getting yourself a bargain if you wait.

Hope this has helped mate, have a good xmas!

Youre probably right.
It's hard to argue with the voice of experience :D

As for asking for cash. Thats a negative duder.
She's very much the type that likes me to have something to open on xmas morning.

+1 if you think waiting for the 6ks is a good idea

If you need to get a card now, then I say get the 5830.
But best wait for thr 6000 series, even if they're out of your price range, they should knock down the prices of the current cards.

Does anyone know what king of percentage drop in price can be expected?
I read somewhere that production of the 5k series cards has been ended by quite a few companies? Its the supply likely to last?

6850 is not going to be more then 200 £ and if it is 160 ~170 £ its not like huge bump from ur budget. so no need to be midge about it , just trying to help.
