XMP Causing Crashes to desktop

I need some advise - I have:

8700k
8 pack 3600Mhz 16GB 2x8GB
Asus Maximus Hero

In Division 2 I was getting random crashes to desktop - after a lot of troubleshooting I discovered that disabling XMP resolved this issue.

I would like to get my ram running at roughly the right speed, but without the crashes.
Note it passed all memtests/stability tests, was only division that crashed.

Best way to go about this?

Set to XMP and raise voltage?
Set to XMP but lower the speed a little?

Thanks in advance

Can't help I'm afraid but I'm interested in any solutions as I'm having the same problem!

When I run my RAM with XMP I was getting crashes in TD2 whereas if I leave it at stock (2400Mhz on my board) then it's not crashed once!

Truth be told I couldn't tell you there was any difference in performance but it is annoying that I'm not getting the performance that I paid for!

Are you on the latest bios? I noticed that all the newer releases of my boards bios all improve memory compatibility.

3600mhz is well above the rated speed for your CPU so it's an overclock and can't be guaranteed unfortunately.

If it were me I would load up the xmp profile, reboot and go back into BIOS. Have a look at your system agent voltage (may be called somey different on ASUS). Might need bumping up if your memory controller is weak on your CPU.

Ok so last night I re-enabled XMP but upped the Ram voltage from 1.35 to 1.4.

No concrete outcome yet but I played for a few hours without any crashes to desktop which previously was not possible.

I will test more thursday eve and report back.

Will check this if the voltage increase hasn't resolved. These CPUs are fine with 4000mhz dimms aren't they? Or similar to Ryzen where it's dependant on IMC lottery?

Test memory stability with HCI Memtest, Google Stress App Test (requires BASH terminal or Linux), or Ramtest.

Tuning at 3600 and above on this platform can often need manual adjustment of the VCCSA (System Agent) and VCCIO rails which are signal rails synonymous with the memory controller

I tested stability and it passed everything I threw at it, I was lucky to stumble across an old division 1 thread where someone had stated it'd fixed it..

So I'm back running XMP now but with higher voltage - 1.4v and I have had no issues since making this change so fingers crossed all good!

1.4v is OK for this ram long term ye?

Yes. Would still recommend running one of the aforementioned tests, but see if you get any crash to desktop events.

It passes the memtests/anything I try that's why it was frustrating trying to find the division 2 issue. When I first did the overclocking I have a pretty old fashioned mentality where if it's not 24 hour stable at all the tests then the oc is no good.

If you go on the Ubisoft forums since patch 1.7 in April TD2 has had a lot of stability problems and crashes to desktop for many people when it was stable before the patch. In most cases they have no other stability problems and can run any benchmark, test or game fine. In my case it crashes about once every three or so times I play it. If nothing else crashes I would wait until they fix it once you have tried the normal driver updates, game reinstall etc.

It's easy to rule out memory instability by running Ramtest, though. Although it isn't free. Simply because it's a different revision of the game, doesn't mean it's not instability. I've had no issues. All it takes is the system to flip a bit.

There are a lot of factors that cause the crashing for sure - to be honest though the problems still exist in TD1 so I would not be holding much hope for the devs to be fixing it in TD2, you are safer to find what is causing your own issues. Mine is now solid zero crashes.

Your right, in this case it is made more challenging as the game has stability issues due to a recent patch.

I know what you mean, I have run multiple instances of memory tests with no errors after several hours and any cpu or more general stress tests are fine as well. My general quick test is if bf1 or bf5 are stable for over an hour you are heading in the right direction as they are both very sensitive to instability. Possibly TD2 even more so since the 1.7 patch which is not ideal for a game.
