I have at home an Asus P6X58D-E which currently has in it Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Triple Channel Memory, but it is only posting at 1066mhz - is this a known issue?

Hi there, you need to go into the BIOS to get it to run at the rated speed. When you install the ram, the motherboard will just default it to safe settings (1066MHz @1.5V). You need to tell it that the RAM can run at 1600MHz @1.65V (CL9).

You can do this by either enabling the XMP memory profile within the BIOS or inputting the rated settings from the frequency, timings and DRAM voltage manually (refer to your motherboard manual on how to get to these BIOS options).

XMP compatibility isn't always included on motherboards, but that ASUS X58 sabertooth does work with it.

Using XMP doesn't overclock the memory, or CPU - these will sit at their rated speeds (unless you do overclock the CPU separately). What it will do is overclock the memory controller (which is on the CPU) since this is only rated at 1066MHz. However, with only 3 sticks of RAM installed these X58 boards are usually very happy to run the memory at 1600MHz.
