xonar and 7.1 toslink

Over the optical? Set audio channel to 6 or 8 channel, sample rate to 48 KHz as apparently that's the max accepted, SPDIF out ticked and set to PCM.

After that it depends on the prog you want sound from but you may need to set the digital as the default out in windows, or specify digital out rather than "speakers" in the prog itself.

The soundcard needs to have dolby digital live or dts connect in order to output surround sound for anything that isnt a pre-compressed audio track (ie, a dvd or bluray). The DG has neither, so you're going to need a different card if you want surround sound gaming. Something like the dx would fit the bill as that does have DDLive.
