I'm looking for a sound card for my computer, which is hooked up to stereo hifi setup. I'll be using it for music and films, not games. I've seen that the STX is supposedly the superior card for a stereo setup, but this has always been in the context of headphones, and the card seems quite headphone-oriented. Is there much point in choosing the STX over the D2 if I'm going to be outputting to a stereo amp, rather than headphones, especially considering the significant price premium? Thanks

I believe it generally has higher quality op-amps and also has phono output, so if stereo music is your primary focus, its probably still worth paying a bit more, the fact it has a moderate low end headphone amp in is a bonus.

That said the D2 is a good sounding card incomparison to onboard/creative stuff, so either way you'll get reasonable quality. The Xonar series is about the best you can get for the PC without looking at older/professional audio kit, or a DAC/similar setup.

The STX has a premium as it is only recently out as well, so the price may drop in the near future.
