Xonar D2 problem

Recently bought a D2 off the MM to replace an xfi, wanted better driver support and to use spdif to connect too my amp.

The problem is that any sound played misses the first half second or so, not really a problem when watching a film but it is quite noticeable with windows sounds and when music goes to the next track. Thought it might be because it's encoding DD on the fly or a problem with my amp, but it does it with analogue outputs (including to headphones) as well.

Does every D2 do this or is it a possible RMA?

Try enabling mic monitoring in the Audio Centre record mixer and then mute the mic.

It's not your D2 that's the problem it's that your amp is slow to pick up the Dolby Digital stream. I have the same problem when using digital output to my speakers with any soundcard over DDL.

The above technique fools the Xonar into continually outputting a DD or DTS stream so the receiver doesn't have to play catch up.

Everything in the audio centre seems to work fine when using DD or DTS. Recently gone from xp 32bit to W7 64bit, the problem is the same. I've enabled the mic monitoring, not sure if it has worked or not yet, although i do get a loud hiss if i turn SVM on with it enabled (used to occasionally get it when mic monitoring was disabled).

Definitely still works, any changes i make in the audio centre have immediate effect. What drivers are you using? I downloaded the latest for windows 7 but the ones on the disk worked fine in xp, i even updated in xp to try and fix the problem i'm having and the settings in the CC still worked.

I'm on Vista 64 so I'm using 6.12.8.1747. I'll download 6.12.8.1764 but I doubt it will change anything...

Could you tell me the steps you did when you connected your D2 to your amp?

EDIT: Still same with driver update

On xp i removed the xfi drivers, turned off pc, removed xfi, turned on and used driver sweeper, turned off and installed the xonar and then drivers. i used the analogue connectors at first, then i used the toslink cable supplied in the box and it worked straight away. On W7 i just left it connected as it was and the control centre continued to work as it had done before, although the problem remained.

Ok, I fixed my 'problem'. After doing some searching on the Asus forums, my default output should be speakers and not digital out.

Anyway jak731, when you listen to music, what settings do you use? Do you use PCM/DD/DTS? I use PCM because DD and DTS make music sound weak and echoey.

When i first set it up i was annoyed at my amp because their didn't seem to be an option to turn the effect off, turned out i just had to cycle through them all to 'normal', before i did this everything sounded echoey because of the effect. I use DD because it sounds slightly more detailed to me than DTS, the way something sounds is very subjective but i do prefer DD, i don't think my amp can detect pcm because i get no sound output when i select it.

Enabling mic monitoring seems to have fixed my problem, thanks uriel.
