Xonar D2X Issues?

Yesturday I purchased the Asus Xonar D2X from Overclockers to replace my old X-Fi Fatality Champion card that was giving me driver issues under Windows 7. Since getting rid of that card i've rebuilt my machine and i've been using onboard sound, which let's be fair, isn't that great.

Now putting the D2X into my system it sounds superb in 2 channel. But I cannot for the life of me get it to work in 5.1 with my Tritton AXPro's over SPDIF Optical.

I've finally managed to get my Logitech X-540's work over analog with lots of messing around. Now when testing the rear speakers, the sound comes from the rear and so forth.

But getting the headphones to work is proving hard. I've tried all sorts of settings and none seem to work. The decoder on the Trittons never shows as Dolby Digital, I can enable Pro Logic 2 for upmixing stereo but thats it.

On the Xonar control panel i've checked SPDIF and tried different settings like PCM, Dolby Live etc but all I get is either stereo or using Pro Logic on the Trittons, upmixed stereo. Which sounds good don't get me wrong, but it isn't surround. The sound in games often sounds like there is an echo, i've check the effects menu but it shows all effects are off.

I've tested a few games, but mostly Bad Company 2 to test it as it is meant to be a great 5.1 game and is Dolby certified.

My relevent computer specs are:

Motherboard: Asus P8Z68-V
CPU: i5 2500k
OS: Windows 7 64-Bit Home Premium

I've tried updating the D2X drivers, first time round caused a BSOD but after a restart the installation completed. I've uninstalled the onboard sound drivers and in BIOS disabled the onboard HD audio.

Here are screenshots of my settings:

Any help appreciated as i'm starting to question my £83 investment

If the card it set to Dolby Digital Live just make sure the windows settings are set to 5.1 (Not 8 channel) and i should see no reason why it wouldn't work, assuming the game is capable of 5.1 PCM surround (not all are - i have one or two that don't work).

I've got the windows control panel set to 5.1, i've tested the speakers in there and despite it putting the rear speakers as side speakers they seem to work fine.

I'm yet to find a way of upmixing 2 channel mp3s though. Setting 2 channel in Xonar control panel causing windows to default to stereo. But whichever setting i choose in the xonar control panel, if i lower the left/right channel and raise up the rear speakers i cannot hear any audio from the rear, i've enabled pro logic ii and selected it to upmix to 5.1 when using pro logic ii but no luck

Actually think I may have fixed it. At least the upmixing.

I completely uninstalled the drivers, then installed the latest drivers. And this time its actually updated the drivers as there is a new DSP option in the control panel and now changing the rear, centre, sub volume makes a difference and all speakers are working

ok i found out its a problem with the asus drivers. i downloaded and installed some xonar unified drivers (had to get a program to digitally sign them) and they work very well, the control panel layout seems a bit more user friendly. but most importantly no more echoing in the games :D

could you link to it? :)
