So i have a Xonar DS in my computer already and was wondering if i can also throw in a DG and have them both working at the same time providing audio for different devices. I'm hoping to have seperate output for Second Life (Xonar DG) with headphones and then using the DS as my main soundcard which is currently hooked up to a NAD 5.1 surround system.

Will both work of them work at the same time?

I was looking at the DGX or the DG. DGX is on a 'This Week Only' offer right now too.

Btw i might be upgrading the DS to a DX or a D1 sometime in the future :)

Cheers.

If you use one soundcard, and use the analogue and optical outs then it will work.

I've done this with a analogue set of pc speakers and headset with digital input. Sound came out of both at the same time.

If your surround system uses optical then you should be good to go with one soundcard.

My NAD amp is analogue.. is that gona be a problem? I just want 2 analogue outputs running seperate programs/devices. I read on some other forums it was possible as long as i dont want to run the same device through both soundcards so i just wanted to check and verify this here before i make a purchase.

As Eames said, if your NAD is connected by optical, no need for a second sound card.

If Second Life has options to select which sound device is used, then you can set that to use the analogue out of the sound card, and have digital set to default in Windows, which will be used for everything else. A lot of newer gamers allow this, but older ones may not depending on their age.

If Second Life doesn't have that option, then you would have to swap between outputs in Windows. You would have to do that regardless, whether you have two sound cards or not, as digital and analogue outs are treated as separate sound devices, even if they are on the same sound card. Windows can only use one at any one time.

There is another way, if Second Life does not have sound device selection options. You could use Virtual Audio Cable software to route the games sound to the analogue output.

Damn, I didn't see your second post until now. In that case you do need two sound cards. Could not you use onboard audio for Second Life?

Thanks for the replies.. Second Life does have options to choose between sound devices for voice chat which is what i need as i have problems with the DS and SL Voice (it keeps outputting to my speakers when GX is enabled) but i want it through a decent sound card as i make Machinima videos in SL. Cant i just use the DG for SL and my DS for everything else? Its only the SL voice i really want to use the DG for.

I thought about using the on board but i just know that the DG audio through a headset is really good and much better than on board.

I had a DG once but sent it back due to it being faulty.

Yes, I agree a sound card is better than onboard audio, so I can see why you'd want two sound cards.

I'm not entirely sure two Xonar's will work in the same system. I know two X-Fi's won't, as there will be conflicts.

Ok maybe i'll just buy a DG/X anyway as it aint much and can always be there as a spare :p

At least i can let other people know if they work together or not :)

Well here is the slots available and i'm thinking the DGX will work in the PCIe slot (so i've read) as i'm not thinking of running crossfire any day soon.

EDIT.. there is another small PCI_1 slot right under my 6870 but i'm not gona use that as its too close to the card.

Any PCIE slot can be used with a PCIE sound card. I was going to suggest using the back PCI slot and getting a DG, but I notice you have a bracket there.

Hi again Marsman.. that bracket holds 2x USB 3.0's which is attached to the mobo but i can move that up one if i want.. i did think about doing it the way u suggested so it keeps a good gap for airflow to my GPU. but then the DG isnt on offer this week lol Guess its only an extra couple of quid so i might go with that :)

Cheers.
