Xonar/Onboard Sound driver issues

I just installed a Xonar DGX and everytime I shut down an application with sound, I got a 'record stuck' effect that could only be cleared by rebooting. I thought maybe the drivers were corrupt, so i reinstalled them. This didn't help. I went into the BIOS where I had previously turned off the onboard audio, and turned it back on. When I rebooted, the old onboard sound driver popped up in the system tray. This has solved the problem, but now I have 2 icons in the system tray. 1 for the Xonar, and 1 for the onboard audio. Any suggestions on how to remove the o/b sound driver? I can't find it in the Add/Remove programs list. I think I need to completely remove the onboard driver, then disable onboard sound in the BIOS.
My mobo is the Gigabyte Z77X-D3H and the onboard audio driver is the VIA HD audio deck.
Thanks for your help.

Quick update, the problem hasn't gone away. When shutting down applications with sound (ie spotify, or media player) I get a 'stuck' sound continuosly.

If the problem reared it's head when you had the onboard audio disabled in BIOS then it isn't a problem with those drivers. I'd suggest downloading the latest DG driver from Asus if you haven't already. There are third party drivers available which are supposedly better than the Asus ones, hopefully someone who knows what they are talking about comes along ;)

Could the problem not be caused by having 2 sets of audio drivers installed? maybe conflicting?

Disable the onboard in BIOS, reboot, uninstall the Asus Xonar DG drivers from Add/Remove (and in device manager if it's still there, tick delete driver), download the latest driver here, reboot, install the driver you downloaded, reboot. See if that helps

Done all this, problem still there. Every time I close, I get the crashed audio.:(

I think you just solved the problem! Damn GX mode!!!! Thanks a lot. Thanks to the others who offer suggestions too. These kind of problems, I can't stop until they are sorted. I could have been here all night.
