xp 32 bit to windows 7 64 bit?

You can’t do an in place upgrade from a 32 bit version of Windows to a 64 bit version because at some point Microsoft decided that they weren’t going to offer it as an option. As far as I know this has been the case going back to XP Pro x64. Only Microsoft will know the full justification for this decision.

You do have the option of installing the 64 bit version if you’re willing to perform a clean installation. This would obviously require that you to backup and restore your data and reinstall all of your applications.

Personally I’d have done a clean install even if an in place upgrade was an option.

A clean install should mean less problems (/potential problems) and you should be backing up your data before messing about with your hard drive anyway, so tbh I can't see any reason why you wouldn't want to.

Win7 is different enough from XP that very few of your settings will matter anyway.
