The big question, what to get...

I have chosen my rig (below) all that remains is what OS, i was originally going for XP64 but a friend of mine has been telling me to get Vista 64. she seemed to think it was the better choice atm. i just hear from everyone else not to touch it with a barge pole.

so i thought i'd post this and ask the experts. like everyone im building this rig for windows 7 in the long run. but for now i have to choose. so if you guys could cast your eyes over my specs and let me know i'd be very greatful.

im spending a lot of money on this, its my first PC in 6 years. i make games for a living so need it for 3D work when i bring stuff home and to work on some of my own projects.

THX

Paul :)

Everybody will tell you to go with Vista, insisting that you're a superstitious luddite if you persist with XP. ;)

Vista'd be fine. I'd choose XP64 myself, but I'm crazy.

i moved to vista 64 last week, no problems at all :)
i still get told by ppl that i'm stupid for doing it, but they are the ones who have still yet to move to vista, so what do they know?

Just get vista.

I know xp64 is nice an familer but myself and a friend both found it has strange habbits of sort of falling apart after a while... (not the best description but basically its almost exactly the same as xp32 and gets slow without regular re-installs).

Anyway dont be a fool, get vista

vista, why use an outdated inferior os. Not much point upgrading if you already have xp. But certainly not worth buying xp if you need a new OS..

I use both, and vista64 is now a pretty mature OS with drivers for most devices if not all. It comes down to a personal choice, but i dual boot both so if a problem on one i use the other and vice versa

I wouldnt touch it with a barge pole!

LOL

Seriously though, they are both rock solid and will bne a good choice.

A long as you dont go for a 32Bit O/S... Thats the bad idea these days. then you iwll be fine.

Personally, I have hated Vista and everyhthgin it stands for, but the truth is that its now matured and the issues that had plagued it in the beginning are pretty much all gone.

This is a similar story with XP64 - I have used XP64 for way over 3 years and I have not had a single issue with it in the last 3 years ( I think the first 2 months had a few hiccups but after that... Nothing ) and I would never even waste my time with any 32Bit OS ever again.

So, XP64 or Vista64 its up to you. They are both great.

I do have one tiny small issue with Vista64 however and that is that Need For Speed Underground 2 wont keep my keyboard settings.
I have also had to upgrade Nero, VMWare, O&O DeFrag, and a couple of other apps which has cost me a fair bit, but other than that, its far superior to XP32 thats for sure

I hated Vista when it was released and went back to XP, but I went back to Vista after SP1 and glad I did so, runs stable, no issues at all with anything, it took a week or two to get to know what I use the machine for, but ince it had all settled down it ran flawlessly.

WOW guys...amazingly quick responses as allways.

Vista it is then : D. is it worth splashing out for the Ultimate edition? really what is the difference apart from video desktops?

many thx

I don't think it's big enough of a deal to warrant the inflated opinions that get thrown about. They both spend most of their time as shells for identical applications.

Vista will see more support in the coming years, so go for that.

Ultimate is a total waste of money, and doesn't bring anything to the table that you actually need. Get Home Premium, as above :)
