doing a bit of spring cleaning on the pc, i was stopping some programs from starting on boot via msconfig. however when i clicked apply, got the message stating i needed to be the administrator to make the choice. thing is i always thought my profile was set as the administrator!

question is then how do i check and how do i change the profile to administrator? i am the only person that uses the pc, with only 1 xp account on there.

cheers

edit: - strange. when i checked if my account is administrator, xp tellls me it is. there are no other user accounts on there so in theory it must be. any ideas?

there is a difference between being 'administrator', and being a member of the administrators group. where are you looking? in the 'user accounts' section under control panel? (you wont see the 'administrator' account in there). or in 'local users and groups' in computer management? (where you will see all local users and all local groups).

that said, if you are a member of the administrators group you ought to be able to make the change... when you first setup xp and it asks you to input a username, this user becomes a member of the administrators group by default.

how do you have the machine setup to look when you first boot? are you using the welcome screen and fast user switching? or is that turned off so you are presented with a proper login box?

if you are using the welcome screen then hit 'ctrl-alt-del' twice and you will be presented with a proper login box...try logging in there with 'administrator' and then the password you entered when you first setup xp (unless you have changed it since).

then try and make your changes and then log off and back in again as your user account.

I think it acctually sounds like the security or permissions is screwed up somewhere. Since you only have one account on there. If you right click my computer > go to manage > local users and groups > users, do you only have 1 account in there? 'Administrator?'
