Got a problem with my 7 laptop being able to access shares I set up on XP. First time doing it. All in same workgroup, XP machine can access shares from 7 laptop, 7 laptop can see XP machine. I double click the XP machine and it asks me for a username and password. Neither of my computers have a password.....

Disabled simple file sharing, folder permissions set to "Everyone".

Turns out you do need to set up a password on the XP machine to gain access on the 7 machine. No way around it. So stupid.

Thanks Microsoft. You made my life that much bit harder.

It's called security. Which XP lacks.

Yes fair enough in a workplace environment a password is an obvious thing, but I set share permissions to Everyone for a reason and it's in my own home. I should not be forced to input a password on a pc in my own house if I don't want to.

They obviously did overlook XP to 7 shares since sharing between 7 and 7 looks to be perfect with this Homegroup thing.

Tried changing the group policy setting that stops logons with blank passwords?
  • Click on start
  • run (or if it's win 7 just type it in)
  • gpedit.msc
  • Computer Configuration
  • Windows Settings
  • Security Settings
  • Local Policies
  • Security options
  • then in the right hand column the third one down is...
  • Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only
  • double click on this
  • change to disable

This any use??

Control panel>Network and internet> Homegroup>Change advanced sharing settings.
