i have just taken delivery of a whole load of new bits to build my first machine i was woundering as i already have a copy of XP can i use this on my new box?? if my old one was not connected to internet or does that not make any difference???

cheers

Did your old version of Windows come preinstalled on the PC or did it come in it's own retail box?

Edit: It should say "Retail" or "OEM" next to the serial number. OEM means you can't use it on the new PC, Retail means you can if it's not installed on the old PC still.

When you purchase Windows XP, am I right in saying it doesnt allow you to use it on more than one system, no matter if its retail or OEM.

Unless its a retail version that your uninstalling from the old system and putting onto the new one.

If it's an OEM version (ie. bought as OEM or with your computer) then you can't move it to another machine. If it's retail then, if you remove windows from your computer or the computer no longer exists (ie. hard drive moved, etc), then you can install it from your original disks onto a new computer. You can never legally have windows installed on two computers with one license.

Not many people have retail versions in the scheme of things, so you probably will have to buy another copy.

Retail (Pro) costs around £260, OEM (Pro) costs around £100. You save money (in the long run) by buying OEM only if you change your PC once.
