Heres one for you...

Just swapped some bits around in my PC's due to the arrival of my new AM2 system for Christmas!

I'll start by speccing it up..
Its an AMD 3000+ Barton running stock at 2.16ghz,
ASUS A7N8X Socket A,
1024meg (2x512) Crucial PC3200 DDR - running stock,
Sapphire X800 PRO/GTO,
Seagate Barracuda 80gig Boot and a 160gig Storage.
Also has a Samsung DVDROM and a Samsung CDRW - All drives are IDE.

I built the system up yesterday and carried out a series of burn in tests, mem test etc etc, all showed fine, then installed my legit copy of XP Home Edition.

I carried out the usual procedure, install XP, install mobo drivers (inc lan), install graphics drivers, then a few apps.

Installed Firefox v2.0 to check I've got an Internet connection, browsed the net, browsed the forums etc all working fine.

Then (here comes the problem!) the little notifcation box came up asking me to activate Windows, so I clicked it, went through the stages, it checked for Internet Connectivity and failed. So I didn't manage to validate it.

Shortly after, I downloaded and installed Windows Live Messenger, tried to login and it wouldn't let me. The error message said it could be a potential firewall problem?

So it seems to me that I have a physical connection to the WWW, but 'external' applications such as Skype, MSN, Windows Activation etc can't see the connection is there (even though it is). So I disabled the windows firewall, and tried again - still nothing, yet I could still browse the web freely.

My router config is perfect, as all other PC's work, and other PC's work on this designated IP too, so the network isnt the problem, its the software :(.

After messing about for a while trying to figure out what was wrong, I decided to re-format it again, and put another fresh install of XP home SP2 on.

Same again! :(

In the end I have installed an old school copy of Win 2k in the same PC, made no hardware adjustments and its running fine, MSN, internet, the lot.

I want my XP back though, and haven't a clue of the problem?

If anyone could help me, it would be VERY appreciated!

Sorry for the long post, and any typos/bad language it may contain - I'm tired :(

Cheers in advance and Merry Christmas,
John
