XP Boot problem - Hard drive?

I've been having issues with XP freezing (mouse still moves) and freezing during boot. Once it freezes in XP it won't subsequently boot unless I reinstall window or do a system restore to a previous point from safemode, that's if it boots into safe mode.

I've kind of ruled out overheating cos it does it from cold and if I reinstall it's fine for hours and only happens after it's been turned off for a while.

Am I looking at a faulty hard drive (hopes!!) or motherboard (doesn't hope!!)?? I've tried upgrading the BIOS but it doesn't solve the problem.

Thanks

Unfortunatley not.

Don't mind shelling out for a new hard drive as if it's not that at least I'll have extra storage. I've got a different PSU but it doesn't have any SLI connectors for my graphics card. I've already stripped any uneeded components out.

I have a work PC with a similar problem. Worked it down to either the CPU or the motherboard before giving up on it and butchering remaining components for other PCs :)
