XP Pro, bang up to date on Windows update, not had any new software on in the last week or so.

Did a fresh install about a month ago and everything's been tickety boo. Was using my PC this afternoon, absolutely peachy.

Went to boot about 15 minutes ago and got a missing/corrupt file error. The file C:/Windows/System... is missing/corrupt.

I've got a good experience of Windows and PC's- always built my own etc but never ran Recovery Console before. Did so, it asked what I wanted to do, select the C: Windows bit- it automatically re-booted and--- here I am :D

I've Shut Down and done a cold(ish) boot to check and all seems well...

BUT.

I had my iPod plugged in and that's caused problems before with slow XP boot times and resets.

Could that have been the problem?

I can't see how the XP files could've got corrupted- nothing's been changed/moved/deleted at all?

More importantly, is there a way to just check now all my key Windows files are safe?

Thanks for any advice :)

things like that just 'happen' sometimes, they're not uncommon

might want to (from windows), open the run box (start, run)

and type...

sfc /scannow

if there are any corrupt files, it'll ask for your xp cd to repair/replace them :)
