XP Bug still in W7, a unreadable disk brings the whole system down.

Must say I've never had it.

Just tried this (got a blank cd and basically scratched the hell out of it) just got a 'accessing' hour-circle (or whatever the heck they are called) while it was trying to access it then a message saying it couldn't read it on Vista x32 (work PC).

Didn't crash my system or anything?

Funny enough i had an issue like that recently with a external hdd. My desktop with W7 locked up until i unplugged it, my W7 laptop crashed completely - but i plug it into a Ubuntu ITX system with an Intel Atom 330 - i copied the whole damn disk with crc errors without much hassle.

Go figure...

i know what you mean but 'brings the whole system down' is a little OTT :)
its just a light 'freeze' fixed by a simple end task

just end explorer.exe
click file>new task (run...)
type: explorer.exe
enter

FIXED

Not fixed.

You can't bring up Task Manager. You can't click on the start menu. Cancelling the install/copy doesn't work. You can't do ANYTHING.

Would make a video for you to watch, but I've un-installed W7 for the moment and its hardly worth the effort!

@ m4cc45, try a disk that has data on it already, like a large file that fills the whole disk, scratch one bit and see what happens then.
