Hi

I have a Desktop PC and a laptop on a network with other people too.

I have set up my desktop PC and laptop to have the same username and password so that i can map shared folders from my desktop that only I can access over the network.

for example, my C: drive on my desktop is set to be shared as cdesk$ so it doesnt appear in the network places. I have set the permissions so only I can access these folders even if someone manages to guess the share name.

i also have shares of folders that everyone on the network can read.

now, your probably wondering where the question comes into the thread, well..

I have just got a new router which supports VPN in over PPTP. This all works fine and i can see the network over the link and the "public" shares. but if im on a PC that doesnt have the same username and password as my desktop PC i cant access my protected shares.

So, how can i set it up so that when i try and connect to one of these shares it prompts me for a username and password.

I hope all this makes sense.

Thanks

I would perhaps try mapping it manually...

When you right-click on a share you should be able to choose map network drive... and then you'll see another box which says something about connecting as a different user or something. Can't quite remember the exact terminology.

But if you press that button you should be able to enter any username from your computer by specifying computername/username and then entering the password, e.g. mycomputer/myname

ive set up another local account on my desktop called Remote and have set the appropriate permissions for the shares.

now when i try and map the drive on another PC using the remote username and password i get the following error:

"The network folder specified is currentlly mapped using a different user name and password. To connect using a different username and password, first disconnect any existing mappings to this network share"

this happens if my laptop is off and there are no connections to any shares..

any ideas?

according to this site the client pc should prompt for a username and password, but doesnt!

ive managed to get the drives mapped. however when i disconnect it seems to store the username and password as i can still type in the address and get to the share.

why is the prompt for the username and password not working? any way to enable that?
