Hi there

I have searched around the forum and found reference to this for windows 7 but not xp (though it is probably covered somewhere)

I am buiding a new machine for my parents but for I am hoping I can get away with not doing a reformat as would be best to keep everything as it is. I know there will be problems though plugging in the old hdd into the new motherboad.

So question: How do you go about cleaning xp to be able to boot on new components?

Thanks for any help on this.

Some people say you can go ahead and use an old OS on a new MB but do you really want the hassle; why not just spend a few hours/ half a day and do a clean install

Thanks Nkata thought it would be more involved than that.

The reason I want to is because either way it will be hassle. Last time I wiped it I spent most of the day reinstalling everything, updating windows and transferring documents back over. The other reason it at the moment I can't find the holder with all the cds in (os, office etc) so trying to avoid having to use any.

Thanks, just as an afterthought, I would scan the start items in msconfig to check if anything loads relating to the old hardware. basically if you ensure that anything likely to hang the computer when booting is removed or disabled, you cannot go wrong. I have done this several times.
