XP Help PLZ!!!!

Trying to sort out my father in laws comp but having a little trouble. Let me explain he has a dodgy copy of XP on it that some dipstick put on (Not me!!). He now has a genuine copy of XP i want to install. I need to back up all his data is there a way to partition his drive to save the data on one half and format and put on the new XP on the other half? If not what would be the best course of action? It won't even recognise my data sticks to put the data on them or dvd's to do the same. He doesn't have a lot of data but it is important stuff Family Tree/Airplane numbers (He's a Plane Spotter???) Any help would be greatly appreciated plz!

Hi eXor nothing wrong with the data sticks i have partition magic on it and when i put it in the Wizard screen just keeps flashing between the screen to install stick and a screen with a flash light on. Put the drive in my comp and connected it up 3 trojans on it straight away!!!! With regards to putting on disks the comp won't even recognise the disks when they in comp???? Plz help!!!! :confused:

Just to add a little more can i repair Windows with the new disk and not lose any data that way? Or would i still have to fromat the disk? i:e Put in disk repair windows and then put in new product key or is this not possible?

Different o/s's installed is XP Pro new o/s is XP Home take it that would be a problem?
Really don't want to lose ANY data!!!! lol he would kill me.

Cheers guys think i may have managed to get it sorted. He had Nero 5 on it so i have installed Nero 7 and am backing it up onto disk as we speak so hopefully i will be ok!!! Touch Wood>>>>>

Hi guys *update* managed to copy most of his data to disk but a lot of it is corrupted by various virus's and trojans on the comp. Have managed to save as much as i can think i am at the last resort now FULL FORMAT and new install. Told him his comp is goosed and he has pretty much accepted it. It's his daughter downloading carp on it. Tried putting the hd in my comp but as soon as i went into it my security had a dicky fit and like i said a lot of it is corrupted. He is not very technical so just puts anything on it same with his daughter. Thanks for all the help guys really appreciated.

When i do get it sorted i will put loads of security on it so it can't happen again.
