I have been given an eMachine 190 that wasnt working, fixed it but thats another story. Its has a COA for XP Home. Am I right in thinking that if I have a copy of XP Home I can use that serial key?
Any help or advice would be great

I had a feeling ou'd know Burnsy!

And if I borrowed a friends OEM copy of home it would still work and be legal?

err, no it doesn't , aslong as its oem, and the pc has the correct hardware it came with then using the Key on the case is totally legal, - also the key in the recovery disk won't be the key for the machine so technically using the recovery disk is breaking the oem licenceing agreement.

Better tell all the pc retailers then

My understanding of it was that you pay for the license to use that software. I would use the recovery disk but it seems to be damaged beyond repair

You should be fine, you might have to ring to activate but you should be fine - also I hope its had a ram upgrade, XP on 256Mb is not fun.

XP on 256 is perfectly functional, although more is always better.
