Long shot this one but here goes...

Friend of mine has an old old old PC that has basically locked him out. I went round, booted in to safe mode, and checked the keyboard drivers. It says the drivers are corrupt so I thought i'd remove the device and force a re-install. No joy, they are still corrupt.

I tried burning a copy of the XP install disc and pointing the install to the CD. Didn't work.

So I am guessing the drivers on his installation have failed and short of a full re-install I am at a loss what to do. The machine refuses to boot from CD so a repair install is out of the question.

It's a generic USB keyboard using 'HID Keyboard Device' drivers from Microsoft. I've trawled the net but can't find a reputable source for the drivers.

Any help would be appreciated greatly!

Have you tried plugging in a PS2 keyboard, plus a PS2 mouse also..

If you still have them kicking about.

Usb mouse works but keyboard doesn't at all. It recognises it in windows but gives a driver error and I can't find a suitable site to download the drivers. Everything seems to want to give me a download of 'driver fixer' apps.

So I tried a usb-PS2 adapter and it didn't work, couldn't even boot in to safe mode as the keypresses were not detected. Couldn't find anywhere in the BIOS to activate PS2 though....

Any thoughts?

Is the keyboard goosed ?

Have you tried a second one ? Does this one work on another, newer PC ?

You say a PS2 adaptor. can you lay your hands on an actual PS2 keyboard ?

sfc /scannow from the command line would be a good place to start.

Alternatively you could try doing a repair install from a XP cd?

He doesn't have any system restore points and for whatever reason the XP CD I have will not boot from his CD Drive. Will try sec /scannow and see where we end up....
