Hiya Guys

I have just finished my new built system, and I have installed XP 64Bit Professional.
I have 4GB of ram in the system, and I thought that the 32bit version of SP wouldn't regognise this amount of Ram.

I looked on the microsoft website earlier though, and it looks like XP Pro 32 bit does support up to 4GB of ram!

Can this be true?

Because I am getting a little hacked off at the amount of stuff that XP 64 doesn't support, and I might go back to 32Bit...

Cheers
DB

32 bit can only use around 3gb. What kind of stuff are you having problems with? I have used XP 64 for years and not had any problems....

Its mainly Itunes, and Zone Alarm.
2 Bits of sofware that I need to run on my PC, and they dont work with 64bit!

I can live without them if it means keeping my 4GB of ram. But looking at the microsoft site, why would they say it supports 4GB if the 32bit version doesnt?!

Because each byte of memory needs to be "adressed" and if you are working in 32bits there simply arent enough adresses for more than 4GB of memory, including any on the graphics card and other pci devices. So 32bit windows does support 4GB+ of ram, it just won't be able to address more than about 3.5GB as some of the adresses are used for the GFX card. 64bit adressing can support a ridiculous amount of memory.

Not the latest version.
Maybe they'll release a new one soon and sort it out.
But for now, my ipod wont be getting any new songs...

Lord Filbuster. Are you sure this is the case? I have seen a few opinions either way so far.
Some say that although it wont show as having 4gb, it still will use that amount.
I'm not convinced...

It is all dependent on your hardware configuration and that's why it varies from one machine to the next. If you wish to utilize 4GB of RAM then you will have to be using a 64-bit Operating System. :)

I upgraded to 4GB at the weekend. I also bought Vista 64 bit, but before I installed it, I put the 4gb in with my Vista 32 bit installation. It only gave me 2.81GB!! Probably because of my 8800GTX. I've now installed Vista 64 bit,and can now see all 4GB :D

If you're getting problems with XP 64 bit, why not try Vista 64 bit. I haven't had one program that doesn't work (including itunes).

Yeah, it's without doubt more responsive than with 2GB. After playing Crysis last night, I noticed that after exiting the game, my sidebar gadget was showing that it had been using about 3GB.

I am not too sure about vista yet.
It hasn't been out long enough, and I dont like the benchmarks that put it 10% down on performance over XP. (And yes, I know this has been the same for every new operating system that MS has brought out. But why go slower, when XP does the same stuff! - Except Itunes that is).

I might upgrade at a later date.

For now, I'll have to get used to the "This program does not run on a 64 bit operating system" message. :(

Hey, it's not just operating systems that suffer this - cars do the same! They launch a new Golf GTI or Honda Civic Type R that is newer, but heavier and slower!!!

Indeed. I miss the good ole' ek9 with its seam welded chassis. Still needed more power though. 185hp is poo
