Just bought XP MCE from Overclockers and there is a Vista upgrade token in pack, however says it needs receipt from authorised builder to redeem, any way round this?

Since Overclockers are authorised system builders, use the receipt you received to purchase the O/S. Its as simple as that.
PC building is a common practice. After all where did you get your PC, or more's the point whom built it. A DIY PC is the most common thing in the world. So if you have just one machine and one motherboard you can only install it on that same machine you install the MCE. The verification comes when you instal the upgrade because it will take the Product key from Windows MCE and deactivate it. This means that you will never be able to re-activate it again, but the Vista copy you receive will be no problem.

It's not that simple as the upgrade scheme states that it must be bought with a full system.

Hi

Go to the moduslink website

http://upgradeweb.moduslink.com/Vista/ConsumerWebsite/

and start a new order, registering the Certificate of Authenticity of XP MCE on the wbsite. Dont use the Back or Forward buttons on Internet Explorer as you are likley to be locked out for 24-72hrs. Enter all your details, put in "0" "0" or "1" "1"for make and model description ( it says in small print on the screen exactly what to put, i thinks its one or the other) enter your payment details and get your order number. You should be emailed to a confirmation of your order.
Complete the Vista Upgrade Form, send it recorded delivery along with your receipt from overclockers as this is your "Point of Purchase" (POP) validation.
Make sure you have copies of both the receipt and the form just in case it gets lost or u need to refer to it for example. The address is on the form where to send it to.

You can log into the moduslink website using the above link also, enter in your order number or COA number, along with your email address and you can log in.

There are a variety of "status" mesages, but they will progress saying in one form orther saying form received, then POP Validated, then Order Shipped. Realistically, you're looking at 6weeks from the POP Validated message minimum.

You do not need to purchase hardware anymore with your OEM XP MCE 2005 as Microsoft has modified the OEM user agreement and your OEM copies are linked to the motherboard bios. You can change all the bits in ** pc except the mobo fine, reinstall as many times as you like and you're still legit.
Once you change the motherboard, you are classed as having a different PC and your OEM version of Vista would no longer be valid.

However, you may find that MS re-activate your copy as it appears some others have. There is lots of forums and debates over this, i.e "its not legal to do, even if they do reactivate it " "well MS validated it so thats all i care about" etc but thats for another thread and it is your decision what action you take.

However MS are within their rights to refuse to reactivate Vista and expect you to buy another copy.

I Hope this Helps
