XP Memory Limit on Laptop

My laptop will take 4GB RAM if I buy two sticks of 2GB, one of which will require me to open the unit up but is it worth it? AFAIK XP won't use all of the 4GB so should I just put a 2GB stick in to bring it up to 3GB total? I want to have a couple of VMs running y'see

only win xp x64 or vista will make use of 4gb so id just stick to 3 if you feel you need it
