Hi mate,

Yeah built it myself had it running for about 4 mnths now, to be honest im getting flashbacks that XP SP3 may have something to do with it just abit of a coincidence i install that some 2/3 weeks ago then this happens may be barking up the wrong tree.

Any other suggestions?

Il defo make sure the jumpers are all connected but haven't moved the pc & there were connected before so can't see them coming loose,

Many Thanks

Sounds like windows is waiting for something to shut done, maybe software that is running in the background?

What was the last bit of software you installed?

Hey guys last thing i installed would have been XP SP3 to be honest its only started to do it for the last few days, yeah i think your right could be something wanting to switch off that isn't - is there anything i can do to check it etc, using Zonealarm at the min.

Many Thanks

Try Winpatrol at www.winpatrol.com
It's a great program for monitoring and changing Startup options. 'Disable' lets you have a go before completely removing.
Free version is more than adequate

Hey Guys,

Finally Managed to sus it out & believe it or not, but its Zone Alarm Security Suite (latest version) turned it off & restarted and it worked perfectly, then turned it of and shut down the system did that as well no problem so its zone alarm - is there anyway i can get rid of this problem without getting rid of zonealarm because this is a real pain in the back side??

If you have Windows own firewall on you may get a conflict. You can only safely have one firewall on at a time.
Search Windows Help for Firewall and you'll find a link so you can turn the Windows one off.
Also if you can only have one antivirus program running at a time (just in case you have something like AVG free around).
By the way, i think you might find Winpatrol useful anyway, so you can remove or disable stuff you don't want running all the time (but make sure you don't touch your video drivers, e.g. the Nvidia startup program names all begin with Nv). You might notice a performance improvement.

bringing this thread back up i'm having the same problem on my pc running xp professional sp3. my pc taking ages to shutdown. i've tried various tweaks including

1) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box

For the next two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:

Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000

Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000

Reboot

If still having a problem, make the next change:

2) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000

this doesn't seem to do anything to help at all, thats if its the right tweak to do ?

the only thing i have running is zonealarm security suite and setpoint for my logitech keyboard/mouse

i've done the msconfig and removing items in there and also i've altered the services.msc turning off things not needed by looking at various guides as using xp pro i don't need a lot of it.

anything else i can try ?

how do you get around the shutdown problem do you have to disable the software and shut the pc down ?

have you got rid of the zonealarm software, what else are you running ?

Try google
windows xp slow shutdown
I had a fairly slow shutdown and went through some of the Google 'hits'.
But the thing that did most to speed it up was to disable as many of the 'services' as possible. This is something where Winpatrol and the link I gave above an help a lot.
Also get as much as possible out of your Quick Launch. A lot of software asks if you want a Quick Launch enabled (e.g. Firefox) but IMHO they are a waste of time, and too small anyway. Microsoft products like Office pile them in there given the chance.
Some are easy to delete, some not, and a few you need anyway.
I have my Connection Status, Volume Control, Zone Alarm, AVG, WinPatrol, Safely Remove Hardware and that's about it.
Anything you can avoid starting in Startup will clearly help if you don't have to waste time stopping it when closing down.
I'm going to shut down now, so I'll time it and report back later how long it takes (XP Home).

Here are my results:
Shutdown: 16secs from clicking Turn Off to blank screen (no signal to monitor)
Start up: 1m 50secs from end of BIOS and IDE checks etc. to being able to start Mailwasher from desktop shortcut.
