I can't put the noir XP theme file in the necessary directory as its protected on my work pc. Is it possible to change the settings manually to replicate the noir theme and any idea where I can find instructions for this. I've had a look on google, but can't find anything.

How about don't bother.

I can't stand it when people mess around with their work PC's. You haven't bought it, I've set it up like it is for a reason, leave it be.

It's great fun locking them down further and further the more they moan and try and install crap they shouldn't.

I agree with paradigm in that they're not really to be messed around with for themes and such, do you really need it?

It could be that the themes service may be disabled:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Themes]
"Start"=dword:00000002

oh please give the techs a break. You wounder why systems are locked down so much now hopefully you understand. I used to run ragged not long back because people kept 'messing' with their own machine. Now the systems are locked right down dreams come true.

Wow had never considered that point of view. Out of curiosity, what is wrong with changing the colour scheme?

There's nothing wrong with changing the color scheme, but the fact you're trying to mess around in the Windows/System directroy is generally considered bad to the majority of network admins and as a result are locked down. You can do a lot of damage if you put your mind to it.

Its not only that, if you are adding a non-certified theme, its technically no longer a standard windows shell, and as a result, some apps can get funny with it (in my experience).

If you had a company car would you expect to be able to respray it or add aftermarket items like spoilers and neons ?

It is as you said a work PC - not yours.

I'm not having a go, but like other posters have said, support costs go up when people start to 'mess' with their PC. For every user that knows what they are doing, there are 10 that think they do !

You could ask the sysadmin nicely and see if he will set it up for you, but unless you can give a valid reason why (try eye strain !) he will probably say no.
