I cannot get XP to install on my newly built computer using Asus P5WD2 Premium m/board. Intel 4 dual core CPU. It loads the files but when it gets to the Starting Windows it causes a stop error 0x0000007b (0xf8981524 0xc0000034 0x0000000*2). Check for viruses and HD configeration.
I have tried it using a Sata HDD & a Pata HDD drive both give the same results.
Have updated the bios to 0606, no change.
Installed a ide disk with Windows ME already installed on it, runs perfectly.

Have you made any changes in the BIOS at all? Also - which dual core are you using? I don't think the 820 is supported.

It is a Pentium 4 D? socket 755, 64bit able, Dual core. I have only made a few changes in the bios such as boot order, types of sata types (sata+pata) etc. I looked for a way to turn off virus checker but couldn,t find it.

If it is a hardware problem why does ME run OK & why can't I load XP on to that same disk & replace ME.
I have googled & read your link several times but can't really find an answer.
Is there a way to disable the bios anti-virus.
Appretiate your help.
Ken.

In my experience, a lot of these problems seem to be down to memory. Try using just one memory stick and swap which slot you put it in and see if that helps.

Tried the memory swap, no luck.
More info.
On 200g sata HD.
Used fdisk to create a dos partition, which comes up with C:19078 m/bytes. If I try to format this it comes up with 'Invalid media type C:.
On the search for HD screen-
With sata only connected - none found. With pata & sata & pata only connected- Maxtor (pata) found only.
Going into BIOS under setup no drive found under any of the above conditions.
Moving to boot/boot config -
With Sata only connected - WD****** 3rd boot device. (That is with it config. to AHCI. With it configured to Sata+Pater, only DVD shown.
With Pata only connected & config to Standard IDE Maxtor**** shown
With Sata & Pata connected & config. to Sata & Pata only Maxtor shown.

When during XP install & the stop screen appears its run CHKDSK /F. If I try to do this it again comes up with - invalid media type.
I have tried to format it with Partition Magic - same message.
If I installed my pata drive in my old computer, installed XP on it & replaced in to the new computer from that XP & would it do any good as it will not overwrite the ME partition.
Thanks again.

Someone just told me that when he used a different Asus board his would not load until he changed his memory from Crucial to Samsung. As I am using Crucial could this be the answer. What make of memory would you suggest.

wme isnt half as power hungry as wxp ;)

I am reluctant to buy more ram until I find out why there are no detected devices in the Bios. Can't be right surely.

Sounds like you might have the jumpers setup incorrectly on the SATA drives, assuming your mobo is SATA II compatible you don't need any jumpers fitted. If it isnt then you need to fit a jumper to force the drive into SATA I mode, check which jumper in the manuals or via google.

I would stick to using the XP boot disk rather than messing with fdisk, etc. You can do all the partitioning through the XP disk anyway.

Can you not borrow some memory off someone to check it isnt memory related as well.

The handbook says 'Sata II 3g' & I have no jumpers fitted.
Surely it should pick up the Pata anyway which I tried as Master & Cable Select. Beginning to think that the board is faulty.

Nobody I know has 240 pin DDR2 ram.

Don't know how or why but the sata drive is now showing up in Bios as third ide master boot device but still won't load XP, so will go ahead and order some different ram.
Thanks. Will let you know how it goes.

Think thats a good move mate, I had all sorts of weird issues (blue screen with errors like you described, hanging during the driver loading on the XP boot disc, files not being read from the CD properly, etc). Swapped the memory and they all disappeared so fingers crossed thats what it is.

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/images/icons/icon7.gif At last !. Have now managed to get XP loaded. I changed the DVD rom into a different socket & it then went through into the set up stage but said couldn't find HD. Changed a few settings in the Bios & it found the HD & installed.
Now what do I do with the extra ram. I have now got 2*512g Crucial & 2*512g OCZ fitted and working. Is this OK or would I be better with just 2*512 of one make?
The CPU temperature is shown in bios as 52C is this too high.
Any idea as to what the bios settings should be to use sata & pata.
Ken.

It was nothing to do with your hard drives, it was that you optical (atapi/DVD/CD) drives were plugged into the ITE IDE connectors (red connectors). You can only use the ICH7R Primary IDE connector (the blue IDE connector) for these drives. I did the same thing

(I realise you have sorted this now, but thought I'd make it clearer for those who may come across the same problem)
