If i were to format my laptop due to not being able to manage the current running processes (theres about 25 of them, and im not sure what starts them all), and put XP on it, would it be ok to use my XP cd from many years ago? or do i need to get some sort of laptop edition for the OS to recognise all the battery management stuff that the laptop needs?

Also if i do decide to go through with this, Will it be a simple matter of installing XP like normal and using the CD key that is on the offical microsoft sticker on the bottom of my laptop, or would i need a new cd key?

25 Running processes is quite low compared to most pc's, and very low compared to most default laptop setups.

You'll need to aquire drivers for the laptop specific parts which should be available from the manufacturer, windows should however detect that it is a laptop and have it's default battery stuff.

The XP disc needed to re-install needs to be of the same type as the key, ie: Home, Pro or MCE, OEM is very likely.

What is the laptop?

Well on a clean boot up my PC only has 17 running processes, and i was hoping to get my laptop (lenovo R61) down to closer to that to decrease boot times.

I know that of course the laptop will need more things running for the touchpad, fingerprint reader etc.. but ive already removed as much programs and services as i can think are safe and there is tons of remaining processes still. I have even made the mistake of removing a program that made my mute/volume up/down buttons no longer work by mistake, so if i try and remove any more programs i could end up with even more key buttons and such not working, which is why i thought a clean XP install, then get drivers again would be best.

I just dont think i have the correct XP cd, the one i got for my pc ages ago was the retail home edition, since my laptop came with no windows manuals/cds im guessing thats OEM.

you're taking the shotgun approach tbh..

use hijackthis to list all startup items, post the log here..
and startuplite to remove any non spyware crap like google updater from startup

If it's a retail xp cd it should be fine. How much memory does your system have? If it's 1GB or less then it's really not enough to run Vista well. Thanks for the pointer to startuplite bledd, it will be very useful :)

it's not been updated in a while, it removes non spyware, but annoying programs.. like quicktime / realplayer startup menus, lots of useless pap

In total i just counted 38 running processes according to task manager (there are several duplicate processes like svchost and hijackthis doesnt seem to show every duplicate running process).

i'd remove AVG, all the thinkpad / leveno crap that you don't use

-remove them through add/remove programs, not through hjt

Im not sure which are safe to remove witohut loosing functionality, The only lenovo things in add/remove programs are;

Rescue and Recovery, thinkpad bluetooty with enchanged data rate software, Thinkpad Power Management Driver, Thinkpad Power Manager, Thinkpad Ultranav Driver, Thinkpad Ultranav Utility, Thinkvantage Access Connections, ThinkVantage Active Protection System, ThinkVantage Fingerprint software 5.6 and ThinkVantage System Update.

The last program i removed that i thought was 'lenovo crap', was HDAudio soft data fax modem with smartCP. Sounded like something i would never need, but it turns out that it was that program that allowed me to use the audio buttons on my laptop.

Edit: Oh and just incase it will help at all, my thinkpad is 1.6Ghz T5450, and 1GB ram, so XP is my only choice as i would rather not get vista with only 1GB ram.

How long have you had the current XP install? A clean install will likely help speed things up a bit, but more RAM wouldn't go amiss either.

I think a format and a fresh install is my only hope now. I just did a restart after startuplite suggested turning off ctfmon, and now the loading personal settings part of windows, just after logging in, took an extra 60 seconds, and once it was done i got a popup saying can't find c:/programs or something, although everything seems to be running ok other then internet explorer which now wont start properly, meaning no windows updates untill i get this all fixed.

If anything, when i had 10 more running processes and more programs installed, i had less issues and the boot up time was faster then it currently is.

I just managed to find my old XP cd, turns out its XP Pro OEM, (my laptop is XP pro and i assume OEM too, anyway i can find out for sure if its oem or retail?). Will i have any wireless problems on a fresh XP install? I dont want to format and install fresh and find out i cant use wireless without drivers, and not be able to download said drivers because of no network connection (wired network is not possible at the moment).

download drivers to a usb stick

start, run, eula.txt

the bottom of the file tells you what type of xp disc you need

would i need the exact same version? Because the eula says XPSP2_RM.0_PRO_OEM_EN, not sure about the RM.0 but i guess the rest means xp service pack 2, OEM, english. My old XP CD only has service pack 1a. Would that mean that if i did a fresh install with that CD because it being an old service pack it would detect an error with a cd key that should be used with a service pack 2 CD?

Or is service packs irrelevent?

Oh well, so much for that plan. I tried to install windows from my cd and it said it didnt detect the HDD so can't continue. And since my current install is basicaly useless now (takes ages to 'load personal settings' after entering password, and some programs like IE dont work), i think im screwed unless i choose to go over to linux which i assume would have more chance of installing correctly (in which case some of my open university programs wont work).
