Hi

Sorry I'm sure that threads have already been made asking about the same topic.

I am stuck on whether to just buy ordinary Xp with my new computer stuff, or buy vista x64 with it instead (which I cant afford at the moment) or just get Xp then when I want to upgrade to more than 2gb of Ram buy Vista x64 or W7 x64.

Just to remind you I cant afford Vista right now.

Why not just jump right on the Windows 7 RC, it's just as good as Vista x64 and I would recommend it over XP. You can still download it for free from Microsoft I think, just make sure you get the 64-bit version. If you like it then save some cash and buy the final release when it's out.

Don't be scared of using it as your main OS just because it's a release candidate, I can vouch hands down it is a solid as a rock. Very stable and very fast on older and new machines, give it a try.

If you're comfortable running pre-release software: 7 x64 RC.
If you're not: XP until 7 comes out, then 7 x64.

vista64 is a hell of a lot more stable than xp64 in my experience..

remember if you go for W7 youll need to reinstall it once the RC expires. not a huge deal more of a minor inconvinience.

XP will be fine. But I'd dual boot xp and Windows 7 RC x64 if I were you. You get the best of both worlds for compatability and general usage then.

Vista x64 is OK, but XP seems better for older programs and with Windows 7's release just around the corner it is more worthwhile for most people to wait for that imo.

i havent found a single app that vista64 wont run tbh

Can't be looking that hard then. Red Alert is one I can name straight off the top of my head, but there are other numerous older programs that have problems. I just find having xp on there as well means my PC can run 99% of the applications out there made for the pc as opposed to vista which it drops to around 80%.

Vista is great, but the OP said he couldn't really afford Vista, so I'm guessing he doesn't want to pay for Vista and then for 7 six months along the line.

Surely XP is not that much cheaper than Vista? A difference of £15 between XP Home and Home Premium. Or am I missing something?

For the sake of £15 you could buy Vista 64 today and (shock horror) not bother with Windows 7. Just a suggestion.

I don't get it.. if buying vista 64 puts you over your budget, what was the point in asking which one to buy?

o.O

[EDIT]
oops my reading comprehension sucks tonight... move along, nothing to see here :P

Hmmm... So, not tried much on it then?

vista64 is a hell of a lot more stable than xp64 in my experience..

Now, my thoughts on this are simple.

While Vista64 has proven itself to be completely reliable, so has XP64

If you found any one to be more reliable than the other, then clearly you had an issue with your PC.

They are both every bit as stable as each other.

Come to think of it, both 32 Bit versions of Both XP and Vista, have all proven their reliability and therefore, if anyone can say that any one is or is not any more reliable than the other then the problem wont be the O/S but instead closer to home...

Windows 7
Funnily enough, I thouht that beta 6068 was much quicker than RC7, its also rock solid and half the size... RC has still more to offer than Vista64 but its not as quick as Beta6 was/is

Go for W7RC - Its basically vista but all the pap has been taken away and all the good bits kept in.

I haven't found a single program that doesn't run on Vista x64, that wasn't replaced by a better alternative a long time ago. Seriously, which 16-bit applications are you trying to run?

I was being sarcastic... I forgot to add a smiley

I stopped using 32Bit over 4 years ago and have never looked back.

But, for the record, there are a few things that dont run on 64Bit, be it XP or Vista... My most recent finding was the WarHammer : FireWarrior game... That annoyed me.
