I'm about to start a new build as my current desktop is acouple of years old now, I've been using XP Pro for all of that time and feel it does everything I need it for but I was wondering if I should now switch to Vista but have some Q's???

1. What Vista is comparable to XP Pro?

2. My XP is very stable and I have no probs with it, is Vista as stable?

3. Anything else I should know/considered?

Everyone i know is still on XP so apart from some google info I have no knowledge of Vista/

New build will be based around C2D Q6600 still tinkering with he rest.

I built a dual boot system a couple of months ago and I haven't been on XP since (except when I was trying to install my new router).

To be honest my Vista looks exactly like my XP because I've turned everything off that looks Vista and put it into Classic XP mode.
I think if you pay for Vista you will be disappointed because you will expect bells & whistles but all you will get is the same.

Home Premium is probably the one you want.

Yes, it is stable. Moved from XP to Vista on my new build recently. Not had a single issue. The only issue you might have with Vista is drivers for old hardware. But if it's a complete new build, then you shouldn't have any issues.

There's not a big difference between XP and Vista IMO. But if you're buying a new system and need a new O/S then I don't see any reason not to go with Vista.

The only reason not to go with Vista would be if there is something you use all the time, that isn't compatible (yet). For example ZoneAlarm works fine on XP, but they haven't yet released a Vista 64 compatible version. I haven't found any (free) software firewalls for Vista 64 yet. But I suspect that will change in the next few weeks or so.

Just make a list of your most commonly used programs/hardware and then use google to see if they have Vista drivers and/or Vista compatible software.
