So, c'mon then, after some google'ing I'm just as confused as before, will XP Pro successfully use 4Gb of ram, or not? I decided I may need to upgrade my 4x512Mb selection when Maya chewed away at half that the other night.

Also, as I'm here, in a ram related note, mine is meant to run at 667Mhz, it reads as this in the bios, but when XP is loaded it's showing as 333Mhz?

Thanks. :p

Hey WotDa, Windows XP and Windows Vista 32-bit support an addressing range of 4GB and within this, the memory addresses are sub-divided to manage both the PCI memory address range also known as Memory Mapped I/O Device (MMIO) as well as the physical memory that you have installed in your system. This is the reason why Windows always reports less than 4GB even though you have 4GB of physical RAM installed in your system. Depending on your hardware configuration, even if you have 3GB of physical memory installed in your system, you may still see less than 3GB.

As for your other concern, that's absolutely fine that it is showing 333Mhz in Windows. I'm guessing you are reading it from Cpu-Z? :)

Hey WotDa, a 32-bit Operating System weather that be Windows XP or Windows Vista can address up to 4GB of memory natively however in practice, the max memory is something significantly less, since you also have to take into account that a certain amount of the 4GB is allocated to the Kernel system i.e. Graphics Card, Soundcard (If you have one) and other system devices. This is normally around the 1GB of memory mark depending on your hardware setup. So in the Windows environment you will only be able to see and use around 3GB of memory.

Gracias, what I thought then. :(

Indeed, CPU-Z, however, by absolutely fine, do you mean to say CPU-Z is lying to me, much like GPU-Z and CCC do about my graphics core speed? :p

it's not lying to you - your ram is DDR - as in double data rate.

double 333 is 667 (well, 666 ;p)

if you want to run 4gb, you either need xp64 or vista64

probably easier to find drivers for vista, but xp64 is a cracking os

My XP Pro see's about 3.5GB of my mem.

You can always go to XP x64 if you don't want Vista.

XP 64 is excellent nowadays. :)

That it is, just as good as XP Pro, i'd have changed to it ages ago but my current XP Pro install refuses to break (over a year old now) and I really can't be bothered to get a fresh install all setup and tweaked to how I like for no reason. :o
