hey everyone...

i've run into a problem and im not sure how to fix it.

basically i was playing left for dead yesterday and my pc locked up. I restarted it as i couldnt exit the game. on restarting the PC kept loading windows XP and the blue bar kept going then just stopped. after that nothing happened. ive restarted countless times to try and get past this and it would just stay there or black screen.

from here, i formatted my pc to try to resolve it. that worked fine and i was able to install my motherboard drivers etc etc fine. as i install ATI drivers and reboot it appears to go horribly wrong again. i then need to roll back to the last known good config to get back into windows.

it kinda sucks without graphics drivers and i cant do anything much.

has anyone else experienced this problem? or know why it would be happening? i do recall installing service pack 3 before this happened, would this happen to change my bios or something on the hard drive which a format would not correct?

at the moment im trying a chkdsk to see if there are any problems, however the computer appears to be fine until the graphics drivers are installed!

i have an asus P5Q PRO motherboard and an ATI 4870x2 graphics card.

any help would be much appreciated

thanks, mo

ive tryed the ones i got on CD with the graphics card and also the latest build from the ATI website.

would resetting the bios help? is that a case of just pulling out the battery for a bit?

ATI Drivers are very picky with what they work. I use 8.8 simply because any driver after that either crashes my PC, BSOD, crashes games and a whole host of lovely other issues ... maybe 8.12 won't destroy my PC when I test it :)

yeah they are the correct ones. i've tryed the latest drivers from the ATI website as well as an older batch i got on CD. I'll maybe try installing an archived set of drivers and see how that goes.

if that doesnt go well, then im unsure what to do.
