Hi fellas, got a bit of a strange problem with XP, or more precise the slow boot up. I've just built a new budget PC and have a new Dell at the side of it

The custom build:

P4 2.8ghz HT (775), 2gb DDR, Asus P5P800, WD 74gb Raptor 10k RPM, ATI X800 XT, SB Audigy 2 with XP Pro

the Dell:

P4 2.8ghz HT (775), 1gb DDR, 80gb Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm, and usual onboard stuff they provide ...

Now looking at the specs, you'd of though the custom build would be slightly quicker, espcially with a raptor in, however, i can turn both machines on at the same time, and i can get the login screen, and login, and have desktop fully loaded to use on the dell, before the custom pc even finishes the loading XP screen

Now i know the Dell POST screen is very quick and beats the ASUS one hands down, but on the dell the windows loading screen, the green bar goes across like 3 times then loads, where as the custom build goes across like 10 times and seems to take A LOT longer than the dell

Does anyone know what would be causing this? Both using the same install of XP Pro with SP2, both have no custom software on (except drivers for ati/crative etc) and both freshly built, same AV etc

Any suggestions anyone?

Thanks in advance!

what software do they have installed

one major contributing factor to boot time is how much stuff its got to load

i built a Amd Duron system that booted faster than my A64, but that was because it had nothing on it :D

both machines have just OS with a few bits n bobs like office/winamp etc ...

i ran bootvis and it seems a lot of time is taken for both "prefetching" and "services and drivers"

:(
