XP Pro Retail

If I buy XP Pro Retail at £200ish will I need to go through the activate process as I upgrade/rebuild my pc in the future??

You will have to activate yes, but you wont be limited to the machine it goes on.

You are entitled to install it on any machine as long as you only have it on one at a time.

Thanks. Does activation involve a phone call or can it be done over the net?

You can do it either way

Can be done over the net but if you make too many hardware changes or install it onto a new PC you'll most probably have to activate it over the phone.

Except even with OEM installs I've never had a problem activating. After a certain number of times you can only do it by phone but they always activate it. I think I'm up to activation number 10 now on this OEM XP Home.
